"In an era of presentism, classical architecture encourages Americans to think in centuries."
Speaking to a sold-out audience at Nashville’s Belmont Mansion on September 23, National Civic Art Society President Justin Shubow explored the question: how does public architecture shape citizenship? Meriwether Academy hosted the evening.
In his talk, Shubow explored how buildings such as the U.S. Capitol, the National Mall, and the original Penn Station express American ideals and bring dignity to public life. He argued our public officials and architects ought to build with that same care for citizens today and for future generations, drawing on the classical tradition to create buildings Americans can take pride in. The lecture ended with a standing ovation.
